When Should Circular Slitter Knives Be Resharpened or Replaced?
Sep 09, 2026
Introduction
Circular slitter knives lose performance through edge rounding, micro-chipping, pickup and repeated grinding. Immediate replacement is not always necessary. A dimensionally sound knife can often be resharpened, while a cracked, distorted or undersized knife may be unsafe to reuse. Base the decision on slit quality, measured condition, machine limits and service history.
Quick answer: Resharpen a structurally sound knife when grinding can restore its edge within dimensional limits. Replace it when damage, distortion, excessive material loss or unstable performance cannot be corrected reliably.
